Where to Find a List of Salaries for Careers

We ask children, what do you want to be when you grow up? It's a good question and adults should follow it by asking, how much is this job going to pay? Everyone has to have shelter, food, clothing, amusements, transportation - the list goes on and on. Be honest with yourself about your salary needs and desires and then educate yourself by tracking down lists of salaries for careers.

There are many ways to go about this task. The Occupational Outlook Handbook put out by the U.S. Department of Labor is one place to start. This resource will give you median annual earnings for your prospective job as well as how much the lowest and highest 10% in the nation earned.  There is also a breakdown for the difference in salary between union and non-union workers. That leads to another source where you can find a list of salaries for careers: the local union.  Most union representatives would be more than happy to share the minimum salary their members accept.

This Year's Ten Hottest Careers

It's common to see lists of this year's ten hottest careers or jobs on websites like Yahoo! and Google.  If you haven't seen one of these lists, simply type "ten hottest careers" in the search engine of your choice and you will get a list of careers that experts predict will be booming in twelve months. These lists can be very helpful but only if you take a few minutes to analyze them.

One thing to consider is who created this list of the ten hottest careers and how did they compile their findings? U.S. News has created an article which profiles thirty careers that they believe have a strong job outlook.  In addition, the author describes what criteria he used to make his list. It was not enough to list which areas of employment will be readily available in the upcoming year; job satisfaction was also an important priority for this list. He knows that finding a sense of self worth increases the likelihood that people entering a new career will stick with it. Job satisfaction is a vital reinforcement tool that inspires workers to do their best. Make sure the list you take seriously has some basis for support.

Choosing From a List of Different Careers

What do you want to be when you grow up? Children are asked that question throughout their growing years and the answers usually change over a span of time. You might have wanted to be a superhero or an animal doctor when you were in elementary school, or perhaps a teacher or astronaut in middle school. In high school, the guidance counselor might have shown you a list of different careers and asked you to list the five careers that interested you most.

It's different when you are stuck in a job that you don't like very much.  The bills are paid but you have to wonder what you're doing with your life. Take another look at that list of different careers or create a new one. If you could do anything in the world and get paid for it, what would you choose to do? That's the first step to "finding your bliss" as Joseph Campbell would say. Dream large and plot your path to your goal in small steps.
