Computer Programmer

Work Characteristics

Computer programmers test, write and sustain programs that computers need to follow in order to perform a desired function.

The roles vary as per the demand. Some require simple programming while others require advanced problem solving programming. Simple programs may take a few hours to complete whereas complicated ones may take years of work in collaboration with other programmers.

Software engineers and system analysts determine how to apply the programmers’ work to meet a desired function. All programmers have a background in learning computer languages such as COBOL, C++, Java, FORTRAN etc.

There are generally two types of programmers - System programmers and application programmers. The former write to sustain operating systems and other problems related to the entire computer system, network or hardware. The latter deal with writing programs for specific purposes such as tallying the profits of a firm or other tasks that needs to be logically determined.

Work Environment

Usually, programmers work out of comfortable offices. With advancement in remote technology they can now be sitting anywhere and working as long as they have access to internet. They often work for long hours and over weekends. Many are susceptible to back pains and eye problems.

Educational Requirements

Computer Programmers usually require a bachelor’s degree in programming. But since technology is growing in leaps, programmers need to continuously update their skills. A lot of weight to prior work experience is given by employers.

Job Prospects and Salary Expectations

A decline in the growth of programming jobs has been predicted. This is because systems are very advanced these days and are able to solve problems without manual assistance. Also users are getting more adept at maintaining systems on their own.

However, need for programmers who specialize in C++ and other advanced programs is going to grow. Also programmers with Business skills will find more opportunities than mainstream programmers.

Median annual earnings of wage-and-salary computer programmers were $65,510 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $49,580 and $85,080 a year. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $38,460, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $106,610. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of computer programmers in May 2006 are shown below:

  • Software publishers $79,270
Computer systems design and related services 67,880
Management of companies and enterprises 67,170
    Insurance carriers 65,650

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salary offers for computer programmers averaged $49,928 per year in 2007.

Robert Half Technology, a firm providing specialized staffing services, reports average annual starting salaries in 2007 ranged from $55,250 to $90,250 for applications development programmers/analysts, and from $60,250 to $94,750 for software developers. Average starting salaries for mainframe systems programmers ranged from $52,250 to $70,750.
