Top 10 Careers for Now and the Future

MONEY Magazine and Salary.com recently revealed an exclusive list of the 50 Best Jobs in America for now and the future.  They analyzed both government and private research data on industry growth and compensation levels. In addition, they surveyed 26,000 workers regarding their job satisfaction, and ranked careers based on certain criteria such as stress, flexibility, creativity, ease of entry into the field, and opportunities advancement within the field.

It comes as no surprise that technology and health care fields dominate the list.  The boom in technology should persist for many years, and with an increasingly aging population the need for more health care providers is growing steadily.  These statistics are echoed by the US Department of Labor Bureau of Statistics.  More information can be found in their Occupational Handbook.

Here are the top 10 jobs as reported: 

  1. Software engineer
    Expected job growth: 46.07%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a software engineer in the United States is $84,779.
  2. College professor
    Expected job growth: 31.39%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a Dean of Medicine - Higher Ed. in the United States is $351,542.
  3. Financial advisor
    Expected job growth: 25.92%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a typical Portfolio Manager in the United States is $100,859.
  4. Human resources manager
    Expeced job growth: 23.47%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a Human Resource Director in the United States is $140,996.
  5. Physician's assistant
    Expected job growth: 49.65%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a Physician Assistant - Medical in the United States is $77,395.
  6. Market research analyst
    Expected job growth: 20.19%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a E-Commerce Marketing Director in the United States is $134,932.
  7. Computer / IT Analyst
    Expected job growth: 36.1%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a Network Operations Director in the United States is $130,983.
  8. Real estate appraiser
    Expected job growth: 22.78%
    Base pay: The median expected salary for a Collateral Appraiser II in the United States is $82,437.
  9. Pharmacist
    Expected job growth: 24.57%

  10. Psychologist
